System requirements

1. HOW DO I START PLAYING YOUSICIAN?

To start playing, you need a real guitar, ukulele or piano (acoustic or electric), a PC/Mac/Linux computer or an iOS/Android mobile device.

This article explains how to install Yousician Standalone app.

2. DO I NEED A SPECIAL ADAPTER, CABLE OR MICROPHONE?

No, the built in mic of your device will recognize what you play. So no need for any special equipment. You can, however, use an adapter like iRig, Stealthplug or the Realtone cable (used in Rocksmith). These can help the game to recognize the sound, particularly when using an electric guitar.

3. HOW TO SET UP A PIANO OR KEYBOARD INSTRUMENT?

You can use any acoustic or electric piano with Yousician, as well as MIDI-keyboards without built-in sound modules. Read more details here.

4. IF I HAVE AN ELECTRIC GUITAR, CAN I PLUG IT IN?

Yes, you have several options for Electric guitars:

1. Play without plugging in the guitar (you might want to use an amplifier to ensure that the microphone hears it)

2. Use a USB guitar adapter* (e.g. Stealth plug, Rocksmith cable,...)

3. Use a special adapter** (e.g. iRig, iRiffstation,...)

4. Use a standard 3.5mm adapter jack. This only works if your computer has a separate jack for mic and headphones (E.g. not on MacBook Air)

Check the next topic on how to plug in (the setup):

5. HOW TO SETUP AN ELECTRIC GUITAR FOR THE GAME ?

After you plug in using a USB guitar adapter, you need to change the input device (you can change it in Game settings)

If your audio input device does not show up in the game settings menu, please check the "Audio MIDI setup" of your computer. Also make sure to put some volume to the guitar. You can see if it works by observing the MIC / VU meter while playing on the guitar (in the tuner screen).

6. HOW DO I USE EFFECTS (OVERDRIVE/DISTORTION/...) AND AN AMPLIFIER WITH THE YOUSICIAN?

The rule of thumb here is simple: the Yousician should always get as clean guitar signal as possible. Overdrive and distortion, among other effects alter the signal, which might make it more difficult for the game to recognize what you're playing.

There are a few ways in which you can input clean signal, and still get those juicy effect sounds out from the amplifier:

1) Plugin without any effects and install a Guitar Amp & FX modeling plug-in (e.g. Free Amplitube / Garageband / or such). This enables you to get effect sounds out by virtually simulating the equipment.

2) Split the signal from your amplifier: Some amplifiers support outputs of clean signal that you can use for plugging into the game. There are multiple means of doing this.

7. GAME DOESN'T RECOGNIZE MY PLAYING. WHAT'S WRONG?

1) Make sure that you have tuned your guitar with Yousician tuner. If your your guitar is out of tune or tuned with alternative tuning Yousician can't recognise your playing

2) You microphone input could be too low. Please check that your microphone input is high enough. You can see how to do it from these link:
- On Windows
- On Mac

3) Your background music is too load. If you are using speaker, make sure that they not too load. Alternatively you can use headphones

4) Turn off any effects on your electric guitar. Any effect will effect the recognition, please use as clear signal as you can to get the best recognition
