How to Start Learning Guitar in 7 Days

By Yousician Teachers • October 25, 2018

Have you always wanted to learn the guitar? It’s never been easier to start than with the Yousician app!  In just a couple of days, anyone, including you, can learn the basics. Here’s a starting guide:

(1) First, you’ll need a guitar. It doesn’t need to be an expensive one! Start with something affordable. There’s plenty of time to invest in a nicer guitar once you’re rocking on the regular. Check some of our tips on How to Choose A Beginner Guitar.

Make sure you’re in tune.  When you open Yousician and choose guitar as your instrument, your first task is tuning up. The tuner will show how far each string is from the correct note.

(2) Now you’re ready to start playing. Hold the guitar and start learning how to play some basic notes so you can learn some songs.

The bottom string on the chart is the string closest to you when you hold the guitar. An “O” on the lefthand side indicates you should include the string in the strum. An “X” indicates that it’s an open string.

With the chords under your belt, you can start practicing transitioning between the chords.

(3) Now it’s time to build your skills! By completing missions in Yousician, you will learn more essentials like playing melodies and riffs, using a pick and more.

With some basics locked down, you can continue practicing to work toward your favorite songs. Once you feel comfortable, you can move on to improving your guitar playing with more chords and strumming patterns, trickier melodies, music theory, ear training and more. Learning guitar takes time so start guided lessons with Yousician on your own schedule.
